At 50%, School Levies And Bonds Can Still Fail….

If you were worried that changing the requirement to pass a school levy or bond will make it too easy to pass, you should look at the results of the Ellensburg School Bond election last Tuesday.

It looks like it will only receive 45% of the vote. It was a poorly conceived proposal that built a middle school way outside of town. It was also one of the worst run school levy or bond campaigns I have ever seen.

Voters are smart. They can tell the difference between a good proposal and a bad one. We don’t need to set an arbitrarily high number to pass our levies and bonds.

We have the opportunity to give local communities more control over the success of their schools. The legislature sent a referendum to the ballot to end the supermajority requirement for school districts to pass levies and bonds. We will all vote on it this November. You will hear a lot from this poster about how important this is for our communities in central Washington.
