The Yakima Herald talks about the upcoming Yakima School Levy today. With the end of the supermajority requirement, it should be easier to pass.
I was struck by a statement by Yakima School Board Vice President John Vornbrock. Here’s what he said:
“Back in the old days (a levy) was more for extras, but now it pays for things like elementary school counselors and safety and security and textbooks and maintaining class-size levels and special ed.”
Maintaining class-size levels? Safety? Security? If public education is our paramount duty (according to the Washington State Constitution), how come we are hoping local levies pass to pay for this stuff?
