One of the challenges as more and more families have two people working is getting time off in a family emergency. If you have a baby or a loved one dies, you have no choice in many cases to take leave without pay.
The Senate Democrats are working on a solution so people don’t go into the poorhouse because they have a family emergency.
That doesn’t sound reasonable to Sen. Janea “Ebeneezer” Holmquist (R-Moses Lake). She complains that unless the Senate Ds haven’t fully figured out a funding package then we should skip it.
In her own words…
Holmquist stated it was irresponsible for the Democratic party to pass the law before answering questions of funding and administration.
“This proposal should be shelved until these and other key questions are resolved,” she stated. “The bottom line is that the majority has put political expediency and sound bites ahead of true leadership and sound policy.”
I’m no economist but I think this bill could actually help our economy because more people would be willing to work if they knew they would be covered in a family emergency. It’s unacceptable to punt on an important idea just because all the details aren’t worked out. Janea, if you don’t think we should have a family leave law that helps people get time off in an emergency, then just say so. But, don’t weasel out of it by saying it doesn’t have a funding package or it may cover illegal immigrants. If you support the idea, then get in there and fix it and stop trying to score cheap political points on an important workplace policy proposal. If you don’t, well, you have been in government too long and you have no idea what people are going through in the real world.
