Obama’s “Yes We Can” Video Wildly Popular, But Will It Translate into Votes in November?

Given all the hype, one simply must listen to “Yes We Can,” the Barack Obama video that’s been called the most influential video ever seen on YouTube. In Spanish, it’s Si, Se Puede! As of Monday, the musical video received 4 million hits, before going viral as fans of the Illinois senator started sending it to friends. According to Pew Research, one of four Americans uses the Internet as their major source of political information. But that jumps to 46 percent among 18-to-29-year olds (up from 21 percent in 2004). With no TV commentator, the video stands alone. That’s why a Democratic strategist has said, “We can reach people on a mass basis without television. That old age has already ended.” However, the question remains: can all this online enthusiasm translate into offline activism, i.e., votes?
