Judges and newspaper reporters – among other public officials and figures – are staying away from primary elections and caucuses because of ethical and legal considerations and out of fear of being targeted by special interest groups who use requests for public information to find ammunition for political attacks. The Building Industry Association of Washington was cited as one of the right wing organizations that use FOIA requests to dig up political spin. This dilemma was the subject of an interesting article that appeared in Monday’s Tri-City Herald.
