…we all have something to be thankful for. First and foremost for me is that we all live in the greatest democracy in the world. Not flawless by any means, but that’s part of the beauty of it. American citizens still have the right, as well as a civic duty, to elect our representatives in government. We also have the final say in designing the laws and regulations that keep our society fair and just for every citizen. And the founding fathers expected us to maintain and preserve all of this, not just in the voting booths, but with our voices as well. But we only have these rights as long as we continue to use and exercise them.
So as we celebrate the holidays, please remember that democracy is not a spectator sport. We all have an obligation to preserve our democracy by protecting it here at home. Never miss a chance to vote, and encourage others to do so as well. Continue to voice your opinions and ideas, on blogs, the radio, or across the backyard fence. Democracies survive because citizens work to keep them alive and functional.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
