It’s time to Cruise the Ave!!

Saturday, June 20th is the first 2009 ‘Cruise the Ave” event to usher in the summer season. This has turned into an annual event and was approved on the consent agenda back in April by the Yakima City Council. The second Cruise will be September 5th. Unfortunately, virtually nothing has been said about the event. I’m sure a PR release is coming or maybe I missed it.
Public Relations is an area the City needs to improve. The City Council could help by at least discussing the Cruise, which would invite media attention. Providing information to the public a day or two before the event happens is not enough time for many “cruisers” to prepare.
There are a lot of people who enjoy the 2 Cruises the City sanctioned and I’m sure several businesses up and down Yakima Avenue would have like to have known a couple of weeks in advance so they can make their plans.
It makes one wonder if the council actually wants to “kill” the Cruise and was afraid to vote against it. Putting it on consent stifled any discussion and then staying silent on it could have a dampening effect on this economic generator.
Just a smidgen of earlier promotion would have been helpful. Anyway, put away your cares Saturday night and come downtown to Cruise the Ave!
