If I-1033 should pass, Washington State will be 50th in the national ranking of states by tax burden. We currently are ranked 26th. The source of the forecast is Dick Conway, PhD Econ., Wharton School of Business, co-owner and publisher of the well-subscribed Puget Sound Economic Forecaster.
As reported Oct 22nd in the Seattle Times.
We can still be proud here in Yakima…We’re 8th in overweight…and 9th in car theft.
Are we complaining about being taxed the least? That seems more like being first…
What’s wrong with being taxed the least of all the states? It sounds like a “utopia” to me! Imagine all the businesses that would be attracted to this state, our economy would soar!!
Living in third world conditions sounds like utopia to Jason. Massively overcrowded schools, crappy roads and bridges, slower response time from a severely depleted fire and police force…
yesserrri..sounds like heaven all right. Perhaps jason should just keep all his money in a jar under his bed.
They would like to see a Californication of the schools and the rest of the infrastructure.
Corie, you seem comfortable saying what you think others believe.
Where would YOU feel best for us in this poll? #1? #20? Quantify it for me.
Corrie and Mainstreeteer
California is pretty close to third world country status, but they rank number 6 in tax burden. California is almost bankrupt. If our tax burden were to be the lowest in the country, imagine how many companies would want to move to Washington, with new companies comes more jobs, lower unemployment, and more population growth, all this would create a large amount of revenue for the state, because companies would be paying taxes as well as employed workers buying homes, clothing etc.
California has the sixth highest tax burden in the country, are you trying to say that they are not taxed enough? How much tax burden should we, or anyone take on? High taxes in California are not working, high taxes in New Jersey, and New York, are not working. Look at the states with the highest tax burdens, and you will see they are worse off than the states with less of a tax burden.
What tax ‘burden’ is that?
the federal marginal income tax for instance has dropped from 80% in the 1960′s and 70′s to 35% for anyone making over 180k.

I’ve been to New Hampshire, their roads look like shit and most of the border residents work in Vermont
Thanks to Ronald Reagan! He got us out of Carter’s mess, inflation dropped, unemployment numbers dropped, tax revenue doubled from 1980 to 1989,16 million jobs were created, his policies increased economic growth, created higher employment and higher wages. Lowering the marginal tax rate was good for the country, and gave people more money in their pockets to spend on things they needed or wanted, and in return it pulled us out of the “economic stagnation” that Carter put us in.
Do you want to go back to those days before Reagan, when the federal marginal income tax was so high? It didn’t work to well back then, what makes you think high taxes will work now?
Reagan tripled the deficit, ya know?
He also said the debt was “the greatest disappointment” of his presidency, you see he was not proud of the deficit spending. Obama on the other hand cannot spend enough, he is proud of the deficit spending and wants to spend even more!
So…streeter visited New Hampshire and knows all about the economy…he IS a quick study.
Perhaps it is better noted that the people on the border that WORK in Vermont choose to LIVE in New Hampshire. That’s certainly a more telling figure, if, according to Streeter, it were true.
Streeter’s link from the tax foundation is just a friggin tax table. It doesn’t begin to tell the consequences of the actions.
Here’s a few links that do.

For those too lazy to click, the long and the short of it is this: In 1980, the richest 1% of tax payers paid 19% of the total federal income tax burden.
In 2007, after the Reagan and Bush tax cuts, they paid almost 40% of the total burden. Going along with this, the bottom percentage of wage earners percentage has declined over these years.
That’s whats meant by “Tax Burden”, Streeter.
I have yet to see any liberal in here speak out against ANY tax issue. I guess that’s because they believe somebody else is going to pay for it.
But in the immortal words of Maggie Thatcher:
“The problem with socialism is eventually you run out of other people’s money”
Did Bush say blowing the surplus he had when he entered in 2001 was the ‘greatest disappointment” of his presidency? Shenanigans indeed!
The surplus that you talk about is a myth…Clinton increased the national debt, borrowed from social security to fool people like you to think there was a surplus. http://www.treasurydirect.gov/NP/NPGateway
the facts are here, all you have to do is look it up.
Obama promised if they passed the omnibus and all the bailouts unemployment would not go above 8% now look at were we are…Shenanigans!
I came from a pretty muted background and tunneled my way up through the detritus to what I feel is a fairly comfortable life, so I may not be the best qualified to comment–but, my impression is that we are a bit spoiled, and have a pretty consistently, high-quality life here in Yakima and America. When talking about taxes, inflation and the cost of living, we all intend to forget quality of life, especially when compared to the war years, the dust bowl days, the paranoia of Joe McCarthy, Korea, Vietnam and Richard Nixon, to mention a few hard times. Yeah, the murder rate in Yakima is beginning to stun us all, but fortunately we have good police who are investigating and arresting as fast as evidence becomes available. Doubtless the drug highway has some thugs sporadically scattered along the way. Poverty tends to drive people down, and that leads to hopelessness, more down feelings, and perhaps a dip into crime. So it remains that if we all did a little to ameliorate poverty and its bedpartner, hunger, we could do a lot of good for our community. BTW, we have some fairly new and really good schools. Washington, Lewis & Clark, Franklin, Wilson, YV Tech and Discovery Lab are all top notch.
