Well, it’s Texas Whoop. It’s a gun culture in Texas, and you can’t promote a gun culture without it deteriorating into a violence culture. No surprise that it’s the state that executes more convicts than any other state by far, while refusing to hear DNA or other types of forensic evidence Their death penalty, not unlike any other state, has not been a deterrent to violent crime on any level. There’s disproportionately more gun stores than hospitals and emergency clinics than any other place in America, which seems very ironic. By the way, in the Houston Metro yellow pages, “ambulance” is listed right before “ammunition”- how convenient. I remember when I was passing through Lubbock one night, and there was a funeral home, gun superstore, and tavern, all in the space of about 100 meters- if only those businesses had merged.
Republicans- not happy unless there’s some killin’ ‘n’ dyin’ goin’ on somewhere.
Gee, I thought only people kill people, not guns?? With the proliferation of guns in the country, our incidence of violent crime has gone up and the fearful honest people who buy guns to protect themselves only serve to make more guns available to criminals who steal them. And interesting statistics on the flow of weapons from the US to Mexico. I don’t know how we can “unring” this bell – seems the level of violence and our fascination with it only gets greater with time.
The gun industry played themselves to be “victims of the Democratic Takeover” in both ’06 and ’08, insisting that Obama and Pelosi were secretly plotting to have local police confiscate everyone’s guns. This of course was great business strategy- it caused a stampede of gun purchasers to spend a LOT of money in gun stores. I listened to a local gun store owner being interviewed on our local community radio station the morning after Obama was elected, and he said he was expecting his sales to quintuple over the next few months, solely “because Obama is a socialist, and will confiscate your guns”. He said this almost gleefully, apparently knowing he could turn an interview on a news program into an advertisement for selling deadly weapons to a fear-driven populace.
Made me want to go out and buy a Glock to protect me from the crazy right-wing nutbags…
